Murroe Boher U-16 Ladies footballers capture “A” County Title for 1st time.
Murroe/Boher 6-19 Monaleen 2-06.
Murroe/Boher girls won the County u-16 A title last night after a rip roaring final against Monaleen. The scoreline in no way reflects a match that was in the melting pot for 40 minutes.
Monaleen attacked from the off and registered the 1st score of the match with a fine goal after a barnstorming run by Caoimhe Lyons. Monaleen added a point before Alannagh Russell responded with a point to get Murroe/Boher off the mark. Another cracker of a goal by Caoimhe Lyons after excellent support play by Sarah Shortt put Monaleen ahead by 6 and threw down the gauntlet to the County League Champions. Murroe/Boher responded as champions should. Keeley Lenihan goaled after a move that went the length of the pith and was quickly followed by a fine point by Alannagh Russell. Another goal followed for Keeley who was having a player of the match night. Alannagh Russell pointed and Murroe/Boher had taken the lead for the 1st time in the match after 23 minutes.Keeley Lenihan goaled again after excellent approach play by Sarah Jane Barry and Grainne Regan. Monaleen responded and had a fine point. During this period Aoife Barry in goals for Murroe/Boher made two outstanding saves that could easily have been goals. M/Bs midfield were now getting a grip on the game and after a fine fetch by Shauna Ryan the ball travelled quickly up the pitch to Keeley who as she was about to shoot was fouled for a penalty. Keeley converted and then added another point to leave the half tome score 4-04 to 2-04 after an enthralling half of football. Murroe/Boher began the 2nd half in determined fashion with 9 points in a row. This was an excellent display of point scoring with 5 different scorers, Grainne Regan (3) Shauna Ryan (2) Orla Regan (2), Aimee O Brien and Alannagh Russell. During this period the Murroe/Boher defence were outstanding only conceding 1 point despite Monaleen putting on incessant pressure. Another goal by Keeley Lenihan effectively finished the game as a contest but credit to Monaleen who kept fighting for every ball and never gave up.Aimee O Brien pointed for Murroe/Boher before Grainne Regan goaled after a fine run.Points from Alannagh Russell Aimee O Brien, 2 from Keeley Lenihan and the final score of the game by Shauna Ryan ensured the title was Murroe bound.
This was an excellent game of football by 2 fully committed teams but on the night Murroe/Boher deservedly took the spoils to win our 1st ever “A” underage title and completed a historic League and Championship double for the 16s.
Aoife Barry in goals had a superb match making numerous goal bound saves at vital stages. Nianh Clohessy Saoirse Barry and Sarah Clohessy excelled in the full back line. Mary O Reilly and Anna Ryan at wing back were outstanding all night and the tussle between Sarah Jane Barry and her good friend Sarah Shortt was worth the price of admission alone. Shauna Ryan and Lisa Leonard in Midfield had fine games and completely controlled the middle of the park in the 2nd half. Alannagh Russell scored 5 lovely points and Aine Cooke and Grainne Regan did trojan work covering back many times when needed but also supporting the attack. Orla Regan and Aimee O Brien were superb but it was the performance of Keeley Lenihan that really caught the eye as she notched up a personal tally of 5-03 in an incredible performance. Anna Madigan and Sarah Laffan were in fine form when introduced and contributed handsomely on the night.
Grainne Regan accepted the cup on behalf of her team to scenes of jubilation.
